The Digs : Stellenbosch University Health Science Tygerberg Campus

(completed January 2020)

The Digs is an innovative development and student accommodation management business which was founded on the back of the purchase of Die Ou Kerkenberg Stellenbosch University Residence in Klipkop Parow in 2019.

Upon further research it was discovered that an incredible unsaturated demand for student accommodation existed at the Tygerberg Stellenbosch University Campus, and along with a limited competition from businesses which can meet all the requirements.

The overall business model is a blend of targeting of undervalued, well positioned properties for development and re-development in key student catchment areas / off-take nodes and branding/marketing, operational and facilities management expertise to create a low risk, high value investment.

A management team and business was set up and the property was extensively renovated into 125 beds. The accommodation is suitable to both under-grad or more senior post graduate medical students from all demographics.

The Digs meets all the requirements for successful student accommodation, based on international and local student accommodation research and experience:

  • Safety & Security (24 hr security, CCTV, electric fence, biometric access, live-in house manager, rules & regulations)
  • Connectivity (fast and free uncapped, high bandwidth fibre)
  • Location / transport (all properties are strategically located within close radius).
  • Community / collaboration between Health Science Students
  • Strong management – both student, property and facilities management
  • Excellent communal facilities (fully fitted kitchens, study areas, bathrooms, chill / dining/ TV areas, laundry areas, gym and store areas, canteen)
  • Secure on-site parking and dedicated shuttle to campus
  • Budget varieties (different room options – en-suite, communal bathroom, single, sharing, studios)
  • Design efficiency, quality, and comfort (amazing finishes and home-like feel)
  • Stellenbosch University and NSFAS affiliation
  • All-inclusivity (rooms are ready to move in to – beds, desks, BIC’s, blinds, mattresses and all utilities are included such as water electricity, internet and no “hidden costs”)
